O Paraná acaba de ganhar uma ONG para combater a hanseníase, o Instituto Aliança Contra a Hanseníase ou Alliance Against Leprosy (AAL). A fundadora é a médica hansenologista Laila de Laguiche. O lançamento ocorreu nesta segunda-feira (29), em Curitiba, com a presença de diversas autoridades e apoiadores, como o presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Hansenologia (SBH), Claudio Guedes Salgado, o vice-prefeito Eduardo Pimentel, e o arcebispo de Curitiba, Dom José Antonio Peruzzo, que revelou já ter sofrido da doença. A instituição, sem fins lucrativos, foi criada para reunir ciência, filantropia e educação com o objetivo de tirar o Brasil do segundo lugar no ranking de países que contabilizam a doença, atrás somente da Índia. Apenas em 2018 o Paraná registrou 550 novos casos de hanseníase, conhecida popularmente por lepra, e só em Curitiba foram diagnosticadas 80 vítimas no ano passado.
Dom José Antonio Peruzzo fez questão de dar um depoimento pessoal e compartilhou sua história, revelando que já sofreu de hanseníase. “A dor no coração é maior que a dor dos nervos. Eu descobri que era preconceituoso quando tive que enfrentar o problema dentro de mim”, confessou. “Nós temos condições de mudar esse cenário. Temos médicos, doentes, conhecimento e a solidariedade nata do brasileiro”, afirmou a fundadora da ONG, ao explicar o que a motivou a abraçar a causa. Para o residente da SBH, Claudio Guedes Salgado, o primeiro grande triunfo do instituto seja promover um aumento da estatística dos casos de hanseníase. “Os números mostram uma queda da doença, mas na prática ela persiste. Nosso maior problema é o diagnóstico”, alertou.
